4 Technologies That Will Change Your Business in the Near Future

By Keith Marchiano, Regional Vice-President of IT One Source Imaging Solutions

I often think about the future of technology and how technology will impact businesses over the next ten years.  One area where we see significant change is the desktop.  How does the future of technology impact business today and into the future?  How can you prepare for change while continuing to meet your business objectives?

Will the desktop computer continue to exist a few years from now? Of course it will. But it won’t look, perform, or connect to your organization’s corporate network like the one sitting in front of you now.

Chief Information Officers, IT directors, and technology-minded business owners everywhere and in every industry want to know how and where to spend their IT budgets responsibly. No one wants to be on the bleeding edge by investing in the flux capacitor before it reaches a certain economy of scale. But then, no one wants to be a technological laggard who’s caught racing to catch up to the competition either.

Here are four things companies can expect to make their way into the enterprise in the not-too-distant future:

Smaller portable devices. It didn’t take long for consumers and prosumers to embrace the use of mobile devices to replace traditional PCs, and though phablets may be a hot commodity at the moment, smaller, lighter portable devices with increased computing power is just around the corner. Smartwatches and wearable technologies are just the tip of the iceberg.

Virtual desktop infrastructure. VDI and virtual desktops are not a new concept. Some vendors have been offering compelling virtual desktop solutions and have established themselves as market leaders early on as a result. But it’s been a tough grind as many industries weren’t quite ready to embrace the concept. Expect that to change in short order as mobile-centric, energy-efficient virtual desktops become the norm.

Cloud-based architecture. The days of the clunky mainframe and dumb terminals are over. Now that fears around cloud security have been largely dispelled, businesses have become accustom to storing mission-critical data and software in the cloud. Moving your organization’s entire IT infrastructure into the virtual world is an obvious next step and it’ll prove to be a cost-savings dynamo.

Enterprise Instant Messaging. Unified communications had its day in the sun. New, low-cost cloud-based enterprise instant messaging communications software like Slack that connects a globally dispersed company in a heartbeat — whether on a virtual desktop or a mobile device — might just prove to be the fabled email killer app.

This isn’t future shock, it’s technological advancement, and it will prove cost-effective to your business’s bottom line, while giving your employees the tools they want and need to be more productive.
